He might have not have secured any triumph during the ongoing Tour to England; however, Indian Captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni managed to win the Spirit of Cricket Award on Monday’s LG International Cricket Council (http://www.senore.com/Cricket/ICC-World-Cup-2011-c100625) Awards.
The wicket-keeper batsman was awarded with the honour after he recalled England’s batsman http://www.senore.com/Cricket/IR-Bell-c1597 back on the crease during the 2nd Test Match at Trent Bridge in July, where the Englishman was declared run out in a controversial way.
The affair took place on the third day of the match, where Bell's partner, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Morgan-c77707, struck the ball towards the boundary, Bell assumed it was a four and walked towards the pavilion, thinking the session had been called off for tea. However, since the ball
did not reach the boundary rope, it was still in play and Bell, who had left his crease, was declared run-out.
During the session break, Dhoni withdrew his appeal and recalled Bell on the pitch.
The Skipper not only won the hearts of the Trent Bridge audience but also earned appreciation from the ICC’s Chief Executive, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Haroon-Lorgat-c61719, who said, “While the initial appeal and umpire decision were correct to the letter of the law, the decision by Mahendra
and his team to withdraw the appeal shows great maturity. To see players and officials uphold the Great Spirit of cricket, which has underpinned the game for more than a century, is very special.”
However, for the ICC function, Dhoni remained to be the only Indian to win an award this year, with Master Blaster http://www.senore.com/Cricket/SR-Tendulkar-c2556 missing out on the player of the year title. The skipper also stands out to be the second Indian to have won the Spirit of
Cricket award; the first being the country’s fast bowler, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Irfan-Pathan-c1601, who earned the title in 2004.
As for other winners on the function, Sri Lanka’s http://www.senore.com/Cricket/IJL-Trott-c1576 won the Sir Garfield Sobers Trophy for Cricketer of the Year, followed by team mate Alastair
Cook, titled as the ICC Test Player of the Year.
ICC Associate and Affiliate Player of the Year was won by Netherlands' http://www.senore.com/Cricket/TG-Southee-c2659.
