Mahesh Bhupathi and Rohan Bopanna want the season to continue – Tennis News
Indian doubles team of Mahesh Bhupathi and Rohan Bopanna are having so much success during the ending weeks of this season that want it to continue for a fortnight or so.
Bhupathi and Bopanna stunned the Indian-Czech combination of Leander Paes and Radek Stepanek on Sunday to reach the title match at the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals in London. The Indian tandem bounced back after getting down
in the opener to beat Paes and Stepanek 4-6, 6-1, 12-10 in an hour and 25 minutes.
During the post match press conference, Bhupathi said, “We wouldn’t mind a few more weeks on tour. We have got one match to go and [after we] get back into focus, after celebrating for the next two hours. We’d like to finish with
the title here.”
The Indian duo entered the season ending championships right after winning their maiden ATP World Tour Masters 1000 title in Paris. Two weeks prior to that, they reached the final of a Masters event for the first time but went
down at the hands of Paes and Stepanek in the final.
Bopanna added, “After winning Paris, we took that momentum here. After that first match loss here [against Marray and Nielsen], which we lost in the Match tie-break, I think it helped us to realise that it isn’t over until the
last point.”
Bhupathi and Bopanna came together at the start of this year, after Paes snubbed the former at the end of last season and decided to play with Stepanek.
Bhupathi and Bopanna had some success at the beginning of their partnership but their level went down during the summers. There was a huge partnership row back in India at the time of London Olympics. That incident put them under
pressure and they fared pretty poorly at the Wimbledon Championships and Olympic Games.
The all Indian pair survived a match point in the match tie-breaker in their semi-final against Paes and Stepanek. Commenting on that, Bhupathi stated, “It was enjoyable at the end. In this format, things change very quickly. We
just had to keep our heads down and fight.”
Bhupathi and Bopanna will meet Marcel Granollers and Marc Lopez of Spain in the final.
