Mahesh Bhupathi talks about Olympics – Tennis News
Second Grand Slam Championships of the season, the Roland Garros French Open, geared up the likes of Mahesh Bhupathi who grabbed the mix doubles title with her long lasting partner, Sania Mirza. It was all going good for the Indian
tennis ace before the outbreak from the All Indian Tennis Association dismantled his concentration for quite a long time.
He was a long lasting partner of number one doubles Indian tennis professional, Leander Paes, in the past but broke up with him at the start of the season to team up with less experienced but young compatriot, Rohan Bopanna, and
started playing tournaments together at all elite platforms. However, the All Indian Tennis Association surprised everyone by deciding to team up Bhupathi with Paes and leave Bopanna out of the Olympics squad even though he could easily contest it if he was
paired with Bhupathi.
The stunning news struck a lot with surprise and some grief. Paes was ecstatic at the decision as he wanted a stronger partner but Bhupathi had not matched an eye with Paes in the recent times so it was a bit difficult for him
to jam back with her older partner and dump Bopanna.
After an intense negative propaganda by Bhupathi and Bopanna, the case was closed in favour of them and Paes was teamed with someone out of the Top-200 list, Vishnu Vardhan. After this dramatic Olympic squad selection, Bhupathi
recently commented, “There is no easy match. Olympic doubles is the hardest in the world. You need some kind of preparation, because we are not as talented as Roger (Federer) or Rafa (Nadal) to pick up the pieces and win a medal.”
Now the main issue is the team of Mirza and Paes being made just to pacify the old man. In other words, Mirza is sacrificed for the sake of something that she doesn’t even belong to. She is not partnered with the player who helped
him grab the French Open mixed doubles title this summer. She will be playing with Paes who accepted the decision of partnering with Vardhan if Mirza was teamed up with him in mix doubles category for Olympics.
Bhupathi further added, “It’s been a long time since the letter has been issued. We did play the mixed doubles in Wimbledon, so yes, we have spoken.” He is eager to win a gold medal and ‘jump into Thames, breaking into chuckle.’
