Maidana thanks his lucky stars over Khan fight and vows to win title
After weeks of painful negotiations, an agreement has finally been reached. Marcos Maidana has spoken about his upcoming bout with WBA junior welterweight titlist Amir Khan on December 11 in Las Vegas.
"I am very happy that, finally, I will fight with Khan. I am delighted that he has finally agreed to fight. I never liked being called the interim champion, so I wanted to fight Khan to determine who is the real champion of the WBA at junior welterweight."
Maidana, the WBA interim welterweight champion, recently asked the World Boxing Association (WBA) to assign a purse bid for the fight after financial terms could not be reached with Khan’s team.
After the request was accepted by the sanctioning body, Golden Boy Promotions, the promotion company that represents both fighters, stepped in promptly and solved the financial stalemate between both camps. If the fight applied a purse bid (now cancelled),
it may have been arranged outside of Golden Boy’s hands, something the company preferred to avoid.
For weeks, Maidana had been calling Khan out, saying that he had been avoiding him in the junior welterweight division.
Maidana said, “I have always wanted to test myself against the best. […] “The fact that the fight is in Las Vegas is even more motivating for me. I already fought in that city (in March, when he knocked out Victor Cayo), but this time it will be on a big
stage, and that gives me a lot of pride.” He continued, “Now it is a matter of training to the fullest. We will go to Las Vegas for nine weeks, where I will be with my coaches. Khan is a good fighter and the fight will be tough. I can only say that I am eager
to capture the entire title, and I will."
Maidana is riding high after he recent win against DeMarcus “Chop Chop” Corley. Against Khan, Maidana will be the underdog, but the fight will be difficult to predict. Maidana is extremely powerful, while Khan is better known for his speed.
