Mailen Auroux cripples Bianca Botto to secure quarter-final spot – ATT Women’s Circuit 2011
Argentinean wild card enterer Mailen Auroux unleashed a barrage of forehands and backhands to crush the Peruvian Bianca Botto with a bagel at the ATT Women’s Circuit 2011, an ITF event taking place on the clay courts in Buenos
Aires, Argentina. She barely sweated in the final set and registered a 7-5, 6-0 victory over the Peruvian to advance into the last eight on Wednesday.
World number 442 Auroux shocked the Peruvian, ranked 107 places above her in the Sony Ericsson WTA Premier Rankings, on their first meeting. The Argentinean lowered the gaps to win her maiden title after securing a quarter-final
place at her home soil.
The local star Auroux displayed amazing tennis skills in the opening set and held her opening serve convincingly. Later she exchanged an early break and then held her remaining serves through exquisite forehands. The Argentinean
then broke again in the end to clinch the opener with a 7-5 win. She capitalised on two out of several breakpoint opportunities to her advantage to help win easily.
With the help of the local crowd, Auroux kept momentum rolling into the final set and easily swiped in the opening serve. She then showed her true colours and with help of angled shots down the line, the Argentinean went on a five
games rampage and pocketed a bagel. Auroux dusted away all breakpoints faced and capitalised on three out of many breakpoint chances to her advantage.
The local starlet hasn’t had much progress in the latter half of this season. Regardless of making a last eight berth here in March, she was ousted in qualifiers or early rounds in other tournaments. Before entering this tournament,
Auroux had a poor record as she won only two matches out of eight. However, she re-focused her strategy and entered as a completely different person in this tournament.
Next up for the wild card entrant is the Slovakian qualifier Romana Tabak who dumped American qualifier Chieh-yu Hsu in straight sets to reach this spot.
The Argentinean will join Croatia’s Tereza Mrdeza who reached the last eight earlier that day. Mrdeza barely did anything in the opening set and subsequently received a breadstick. However, she raised the bar of her game after
the opening set and rallied past a local tennis star Maria Irigoyen in a three set thriller. After almost two hour long marathon, the Croat eventually registered a 1-6, 6-2, 6-2 success on their first duel with each other.
