I've never really mailed anything out of the country before, so could someone please tell me all the steps involved in mailing something from Vancouver B.C (v0n 1v3) to Charlottesville, VA (22902)

Thanks a bunch :)

  1. If it is a  package you will need to do a customs declaration stating what is in it and the value - you will get the form at the post office - it is easy to do.  If it is a letter, you will just need to address the envelope correctly and use the correct postage.  They will also give you that information at the post office or postal services outlet.

  2. You treat it just the same as Canadian mail - you need the full address and the US zip (like our postal code only it is usually 5 numbers or two sets of 4 or 5 numbers) code - then buy the right denomination of stamp for mail to the US - I think it is now around 95 cents for regular letter mail.   If it is larger than regular letter mail, you will have to have it weighed before buying the stamps.  You can go anywhere that sells stamps.

  3. It depends on how you want to mail/ship it.  Canada has a special stamp for Canada-US lettermail that you can buy at any convenience store or Canada Post office.

If you are sending something 'small packet' or 'large packet' size. You will need to choose surface mail or air-mail.

My advice is to go to the post office with your letter/parcel and tell them where you want it to go. They will help you with all the details.
