Main Sequence eyeing Grand Prix de Paris at Longchamp
Trainer David Lanigan is happy with Main Sequence’s progress, as he bids for the Grand Prix de Paris at Longchamp on next Saturday, July 14th. The 2-year-old colt could not retain his unbeaten record, when finishing second behind Camelot in the
Investec Derby at Epsom last month.
Although he ran well in the hands of Ted Durcan, it was almost impossible for him to challenge Aidan O’Brien’s champion runner. Lanigan’s charge took a steady start, but held up in the last trio in the middle stages of the Group 1 race. He made plenty of
progress 6f out and became fifth in the straight.
The dashing colt pumped up his speed to a great extent and secured the third place a couple of furlongs before the finishing line. However, the 9-1 chance failed to make an impression inside the final furlong and as a result, fell short by five lengths.
Main Sequence was unable to create any problem for the victor, but was lucky to bag the second prize by a short head’s distance. He has entered the Princess of Wales's Stakes at Newmarket's July meeting, but Lanigan is likely to prefer a trip to France,
where the runner will compete with his age fellows.
"He's done well. He had a quiet week after the Derby and we decided early we weren't going to supplement him for Ireland because there was always a danger the ground would come up very soft and it was always the race for Camelot," Lanigan told At The Races.
He continued: “He'll do his last proper piece on Saturday. I thought I was being very clever entering him for the Princess of Wales's, but it looks like the Breeders' Cup Turf on the entries so he'll go to France for the Grand Prix de Paris, that's the plan.”
The Niarchos Family-owned also holds entries for next month’s Neptune Investment Management Great Voltigeur Stakes and the Group 1 Juddmonte International Stakes at York.
He has registered four classy wins so far, including the Betfred Derby Trial Stakes at Lingfield in May. The Group 3 contest saw him upsetting the 5-4 favourite, Shantaram, by ¾ a length.
