Maine Coon cats....info please?

Question

I just lost my 12 year old Maine Coon (male) cat and am thinking of getting a FEMALE maine coon cat....are their temperments tha same as the males? and is it likely to cause a problem with my 10 year old 'moggie' cat?

You can get a Maine Coon from the shelter - or check on petfinders.com to find one as well.  Maine Coon females are actually more calmer than males, and even though males usually weigh more when at normal, average weight - females tend to get fat easier, so you will need to watch what and how much they eat.  As for causing a problem with your 10 year old cat - it wouldn't matter the breed - it's all in how you introduce the new cat to the household.  The best way is to put the new cat in a separate room with it's food/water dish and litterbox.  Let the older cat and newer cat get to know each other through the door.  When you think, after a few days, they are ok with each other, then let the new kitty out and monitor them.  They may hiss and swat - it's ok, stay out of it - they are just seeing who will be the alpha cat and their placement in the house.  Good luck - I love my two Maines - and I got both working with the Maine Coon rescue group at (mainecoonrescue.com).

I don't have an answer for you. I just wanted to say that I live in central Arkansas and have never heard of a Maine Coon Cat. I looked at some on a few sites, and oh my Lord they are big and so pretty. I learned something today! Lol.

i have a maine coon cat as well, shes 6 and has a bit of a temper, but at the end of the day there an absolute gorgeous breed.
