Me and my gf are travelling around australia for 5 months towards the end of the year. We will be in sydney around Christmas and new year? Is it busy in sydney new year? Should we book now for a place to stay, or take our chances when over there? I have heard that hostels and hotels are jam packed at this time!! Any advice would be great! Thanks.

  1. The main holiday period in NSW runs from Christmas Day, through to the week after New Years Day. This is when the most people are travelling to see family or on family holidays, so it will be very hard to find accomodation anywhere in the country at this time unless you book early.

After this period, it remains busy, but you will be able to find accomodation on the spur of the moment if you look hard enough, but it's impossible during this time.

Booking ahead is pretty much essential, unfortunately.

  2. Any part of the world including Australia is the busiest time at Christmas/New Years, so yes book your accommodation ASAP.

  3. I would advise you to book your accommodation NOW for Christmas & New year in Australia. Sydney gets very busy particularly at New year!

My friends spent New year out there a few years back and actaully booked dinner on a boat in the harbour whislt seeing in the New year.

get organising your hotel/hostel now as places get booked up really quickly.

Hope you have a great time!

  4. New Years eve Celebrations are huge in Sydney, very busy

  5. It's always wise to book early.

  6. Sydney is freakishly packed around New Years. They say 1 million people come out on Sydney harbour for New Year's Eve to see the fireworks. But please don't let that deter you, Sydney's New Years Eve fireworks are something you have to see in Australia.

Like was said above, it's always wise to book early.

  7. I'm not Australian, but my son lives there, and I've been there lots of times - and three months is the longest period of time a non Australian can spend there without a work visa.  Maybe your circumstances are different - good luck.

  8. Sydney at Christmas and New Years is h**l busy, definitly book now, don't wait. Many places book out for new years more then a year in advance.

Tip - Stay in a suburb further away from the city, you have more chance of availability and the prices will be more realistic, city prices can triple over the holidays.
