Question:

Major Cities without Notable Hip-Hop Artists ?

by  |  earlier

Cities like New York, LA, Houston, and Chicago all have a slew of artists that get national coverage but what about major cities without notable hip-hop artists. They have the money, and a large population so why isn't any talent getting any?

Cities that come to mind:

Dallas (except DOC but most are unaware)

Fort Worth

Birmingham

Baltimore

DC

San Diego

Pittsburgh

St. Paul (you here about Minneapolis)

Cleveland (besides Bone when's the last time you heard someone from there)

Cincinnati

Columbia

I mean really what's up with that?

(Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.)

  1. There are good underground artists from those places but from mainstream there aren't any because the industries just dont look there. If you see a rapper from lets say San Diego many people will be like "he aint good cuz he aint from __________"  Means no money for the industries :o.

NR you look ripped out of your mind in ur pic........ nice!

  2. ^ I wouldn't say Wale is "notable"

    Cincinnati has Hi-Tek.

I'm not trying to prove you wrong or anything though, I see your point.

EDIT: Also, I wouldn't say New Orleans has any GOOD notable rappers.

  3. From DC and we have no good MC's

    besides WALE

    and for Bmore-Substainal  is nice.

EDIT:These cities do have great MCs

but in today's hip hop It will never get noticed

Thats why I take the time to listen to Underground Rap and lots of researching

because TV and Radio isnt gonna give

    me what I wanna hear.

  4. I'm not a fan but Bob Wow is from Columbus area, Reynoldsburg suburb. I know because I live in Reynoldsburg.

(No I don't know him, didn't go to school with him or anything, but the news media makes a pretty big deal out of him here because he's local.)

If you don't want to believe me, you can also see that on his Wikipedia page.

  5. I'm from the Boston area and we really dont have a strong hip-hop presence when it comes to artist

  6. Plenty more cities if we look outside of the US but within the US, I think this is a pretty good list (except I don't know if it's fair to count Dallas-Fort Worth and Minneapolis-St. Paul as separate cities; kinda like how the Bay is seen as one area).

There are probably a few different reasons for why these cities don't have notable artists.  Some cities fall under the shadow of others.  For example, two of the six members of the Visionaries are from San Diego but the crew is by and large seen as being from LA.

Dallas-Fort Worth is the scene that I am most familiar with.  There are a couple of issues that I see there.  One, people automatically think that all Texas rappers are from Houston.  Two, fans there aren't critical enough.  So a lot of cats end up thinking that they are better than they are and don't catch on elsewhere.  Then the rappers that *are* good either get caught up in that stigma or move elsewhere to get their recognition (like DOC).

  7. Cleveland has Ray Cash. Granted he only had one hit a couple years ago.

    Cincinnati has Bow Wow.

Another city you can throw in is Boston. I can't come up with a notable artist from there.

  8. DC has such a strong Go-Go following most aint tryin to rap. (Unless we takin bout Scarface or Pac)

noted artist - DJ Kool, Wale(dudes from Largo,Md.), Black Indian, Southeast Slim, Kev Brown

B-more has Baltimore Club music, when Im DJ there its like 30 mins of RHH and 3.5 hours of Club music

noted artist - Comp, DK (7 30), Yung Leek, Bossman

  9. Wale is wack and not really worthy of notice IMHO.

    Interesting Q

Cincinnati also has Donwill and Ilyas from Tanya Morgan

@Alberto: Mr Lif and Benzino are both from Boston

  10. My hometown Toronto. The last big hip hop artist we had was Maestro Fresh Wes. I guess Kardinal Offishall as well. But for being the 5th largest city in North America and with a large Caribbean population, you'd think we'd have more notable artists.

    Phoenix AZ

Seattle WS hasn't had a notable rapper since Sir Mix A Lot

    Denver, CO

    Cinci has Hi-Tek

  11. The girls in the office at work told me about this

    free offer http://www.watchgigs.com/register.html

I know its not quite what you referred to but it's still free!

    Nikki

  12. Fresno, California is kind of a major city, it's bigger than where i live, and they have Planet Asia, and a few other undergroung artists

  13. Shitsburgh has some local dudes but nothing main stream(i believe the r&b group crave are from there). They all try to rap like they are from the south.

  14. Texas, Im sad to say this, doesn't have any noticed emcees.  There are tons of UG but they don't get any play time down here because of all the whack c**p.  And as we all know, if you don't get local airtime, you will most likely never get any airtime anywhere.

  15. Dang! You named Cleveland Already! haha

    I live close to there..

I dont like rap, but I do Bone Thugs, but also Bow Wow.

I do believe he was from Columbus or Cincinatti .

But yah, nothing really. Now we just have crappy wanna be rappers and their stuff sucks.

The best that never got big was J Popson. He was the screamer in the band Mushroomhead if you have ever heard of them. His rap name was 10,000 cadillacs. AMAZING STUFF!

  16. Yea ok citites, WHAT ABOUT COUNTRIES!!! lol

Canada gets no love and I know nuff talent (well at least in Toronto)

  17. Good question..Miami is one you missed!!!!

    Flo Rida

    Jacki-O

    DJ Khaled

    Pitbull (rapper)

    Rick Ross (rapper)

    Trick Daddy

    Trina
