Major League Baseball: Option Deadline
It's now past midnight and the option deadline has passed in Major League Baseball. The time for exercising and declining rights has gone by and now teams from all over the country will look to capitalize on the free agents’ list when the daylight hits the
streets in the morning.
It’s the off season and as ball clubs look to plan ahead for 2011, there is much to do in the process. Dominant figures highlight the ‘list’ and it’s anyone’s wonder which team will rise to the top, to take the right pack of players from the cluster. Nevertheless
it is a good moment to review the early decisions that took place recently.
For starters, the 34 year old slugging machine, David Oritz, has been granted the option to continue on as a Boston Red Sox designated hitter as his salary goes up to $12.5 million. Though the power hitter was looking for a multiyear contract, the ball club
persuaded the big man to concede to a year by year deal. The issue on hand has been speculated to deal with the defensive potential and the batting performance on the plate as the slugger has an age that can split his contribution.
The Texas Rangers, on the other hand, recently denied Vladimir Guerrero an option to continue on with a $9 million salary in 2011. The strong hitter had a good year in Major League Baseball as he attained .841 rating in ‘On Base plus Slugging’. In addition
he batted in 115 runs and smashed a total of 29 homers. Nevertheless, his contribution hasn’t been deemed worthy of the salary package he demands. He fell off the track midway in the season and regarding his age, his out fielding days are numbered.
In other news, Adrian Beltre has apparently moved out from the Boston Red Sox. Riding on 31, the veteran hitter is hoping to strike a multiyear deal with a club out in the Major League. His batting average of 0.321 and a total of 589 At-Bats is something
to be impressed by. His on base plus slugging peaks at .919 and he slammed 28 home runs during the campaign. He’s likely going to find himself a comforting deal in the coming days.
