Major League Baseball Power Ranking: Week 17 – Part 5
17. New York Mets have a decent win-loss record of 52-51 but their performance has been overshadowed by the strong Philadelphia Phillies who are 65-37 for the season thus far. This makes the Mets 13.5 games behind the Phillies and the Mets now do not have
much to play for this season with a clear leader from the National League already in the forefront.
18. Chicago White Sox have given performances in bits and pieces this season. Where they have outperformed teams on the road, the White Sox have failed to capitalise on the home games and have an unfortunate win-loss record of 22-26. Moving deep into the
second half of the season, the White Sox can emerge strong if they find a winning strategy for their home games.
19. Where teams are finding formulas to convert losses into wins and reshuffle their line-ups to experiment for the next season, the Washington Nationals have failed to rise to the challenge. They have the third highest margin in the league for games back
from the division leader at 16. At least they are among the top in something!
20. Minnesota Twins have held on to their 20th position but they would be irritated of wasting the 12 home-game stretch after the All-Star break. The Twins managed to win just six encounters out the 12 games they played at home and more importantly,
lost 3-1 to the division leaders’ Detroit Tigers. Had the result of the series been completely opposite, the Twins would have been in a commanding position at this stage.
21. Colorado Rockies are 11 games behind the San Francisco Giants in the National League West Division with a win-loss record of 48-55 so far in the season. Their last ten games and their performances on Sunday have been a major hurdle in their progress.
The Rockies have managed just three wins in their previous ten games and have lost on every Sunday for the past 14 weeks and still counting. An eight game deficit lies ahead of them if they have to challenge the second placed Arizona Diamondbacks. Time to
revisit their strategy and experiment for the next season!
22. Florida Marlins move one place up from their 23rd position last week helped by a decent performance after the All-Star break. The Marlins have won seven of their 12 post All-Star games and a patch of four consecutive losses was their only
poor showing in this stretch. The team has shown glimpses of high scoring abilities, scoring 13 runs against the Cubs and 11 runs against the Washington Nationals. The Marlins will want to develop an intensive game plan for their next campaign and see what
needs to be done in the transfer saga.
23. After seeing the 25th spot last week, the Oakland Athletics have improved two spots to finish 23rd this week. Their improvement has come from their attacking strategy after the All-Star break and a subsequent 6-4 win-loss record
in the previous ten games. However, they are still at least 10 games behind Los Angeles Angels and just 2.5 games ahead of Seattle Mariners. The Mariners are on a 17 game losing-streak and the A’s should be cautious of resurgence by the Mariners. If the A’s
do not sustain their winning percentage, they might end up replacing the Mariners at the bottom of the AL West Division.
