Major League Baseball Power Rankings: Week 5 - Part 2
For the better part, this week’s Power Rankings haven’t changed significantly as compared to last week’s. At the end of the day the Philadelphia Phillies remained at the top position and the Houston Astros remained at Number 30.
The Florida Marlins also slipped by one position to reach the sixth spot. With Josh Johnson on board and a 17-9 record, they seem to be on their way to the top. Johnson managed a 0.88 ERA within 41 innings and struck out 39 while giving up a mere 18 hits.
He is one of the nastiest pitchers in Major League Baseball, without a doubt.
The Tampa Bay Rays are currently at Number seven which is quite an improvement from the number 15 spot they were at last week. They have a 15-13 record. The Rays need another good stretch of games to further improve their standing in the rankings.
The St. Louis Cardinals climbed one spot to reach the eighth position this week. There record stands at 16-12 as their offensive surge continues. The Cardinals managed a .370 OBP in this week and won two out of the three games against the Houston Astros
and the Atlanta Braves. Had they had one more win against both teams they would’ve had two sweeps added to their record.
The Los Angeles Angels slipped two spots to reach the ninth position with a 16-12 record. Even though Jered Weaver and Dan Haren had one win, they went 4-2 last week. On the other hand, Howie Kendrick the second baseman seems almost unstoppable as he hits
.300/.384/.545.
The Cincinnati Reds went down by two spots to reach the 10th position in the ranking. Their record stands at 14-14 and Joey Votto seems to be making up for their offence that is struggling. In every game that has been played by him since the season
started, he has been successful in reaching base while hitting .357/.492/.602. It looks like he is a Most Valuable Player in the making.
The Milwaukee Brewers have a 13-14 record and climb one spot to reach the 11th position. Their performance against the Houston Astros where they lost two out of the three games could’ve been better. It seems that Zack Greinke’s return will help
in the improvement of their performances.
The San Francisco Giants come at Number 12 with a 13-14 record which is simply not what is expected of the reigning World Series Champions. The fact that Pablo Sandoval would not be able to perform for almost four to six weeks due to a broken bone is definitely
bad news for the Giants. Their run scoring slump would probably reach an all new low without his presence.
The Atlanta Braves come at Number 13th with a 14-15 record. Although it is an improvement from the 17th position they were at last week, Rogers McDowell and Derek Lowe have let their team down.
