Major League Baseball Power Rankings: Week 6 - Part 1
Power Rankings that are released by top sporting websites after each week determine the standing of a team in positions between Number 1, which is the top spot and Number 30 which is the lowest.
Philadelphia Phillies have been on quite a high given that this is their third week on the Top of the Rankings. This week wasn’t anything spectacular for the team but they managed to have enough wins to stay in the top position.
Below are this week’s rankings, there haven’t been many dramatic changes in the positions, only subtle ones.
Like mentioned before, the Philadelphia Phillies are getting comfortable on the first position given that this is their third consecutive week on the top. They have a strong 22-11 record but one of the problems that seem to be prevailing is their poor offence.
The state of their offence can be determined by the fact that in the passage of three games they have only scored a mere five runs. The Phillies currently have arguably the best pitching rotation in all of Major League Baseball but their manager, Charlie Manuel
needs to realise that pitching alone cannot carry a team on its shoulders, regardless of how flawless it may be.
The spot that held the New York Yankees last week now has the Cleveland Indians. They come on Number 2 with a 22-11 record, just like Philadelphia. This week they suffered their first extra innings loss since April 13 against the Los Angeles Angels. Their
offence also seemed to lose a bit of their heat but that doesn’t mean the team started slacking. They went 3-3 against tricky pitching in the West Coast and had their first series win in Oakland Coliseum since July 2002.
The New York Yankees exchanged places with the Indians to reach the third spot in the rankings with a 19-13 record. The face of the Yankees, Derek Jeter belted out his first two home runs of the season in Texas against the Rangers. There had been some talk
of Jeter slumping due to his age, but looks like he is intent on silencing all his critics as his batting now stands at 276/.331/.350. The Bronx Bombers had a 12-5 victory over the Rangers this week as well.
The Tampa Bay Rays climbed their way up to the fourth position from the seventh position that they were at last week. They currently have a 20-14 record and just wrapped up a five win week. The American League East if full of power packed teams and to be
tied for the first spot in the AL East is quite an honour for the Rays. It goes to show how much the team has improved along with Brandon Guyer, who has been called the Rays’ improbable hero.
