Major League Baseball Rankings: Week 9 - Part 5
The Seattle Mariners are at the 17th position this week followed by the Colorado Rockies and the Baltimore Orioles at the 18th and 19th position. The Oakland Athletics and Pittsburgh Pirates are close behind at the 20th
and 21st spot.
The Kansas City Royals who are at the 22nd position with a 23-29 record don’t show any signs of improvement with Joakim Soria, their closer going from bad to worse. His walk rate keeps on increasing whereas his strike rate is rapidly decreasing.
The New York Mets who are 24-28 at the Number 23 position, have a power house performer in the form of Jose Reyes who is leading not just the league, but all of baseball in hits, triples, multi hits and stolen bases. Instead of cashing in on Reyes success,
the Mets are failing to grab opportunities and rely on Reyes too much. No matter how good a player is, the rest of the team needs to put in their own effort as well.
The Chicago White Sox are at the 24th spot with a 24-31 record as Adam Dunn fails to meet the expectations put on him after the White Sox acquired him in off-season. Their saving grace comes in the form of Alexei Ramirez who has managed to impress
everyone while establishing himself as an excellent short-stop in the American League.
The already struggling Los Angeles Dodgers have five of their relievers in the Disabled List as they settle at the 25th spot with a 25-30 record. Looks like the entire off field tensions like the acquisition of the franchise by Bud Selig, the
tensions between Frank McCourt and Major League Baseball as well as the controversy of the Dodger Stadium attack is too much for the players to concentrate on the game.
The Chicago Cubs are at Number 26 with a 23-28 record. The team has been suffering from a string of injuries due to which inexperienced replacements are being included in the already lacking line up. Even the players who are experienced aren’t doing their
part. The only hope in the team is Starlin Castro who is turning out to be excellent as a short-stop and Carlos Marmol who is producing the only punch in the entire bull-pen.
The Washington Nationals are the 27th position with a 22-30 record. They suffered defeat at the hands of the Philadelphia Phillies and ex-Philly who signed on to the Nationals for a staggering $127-million, Jayson Werth couldn’t do anything to
stop them.
The San Diego Padres remain exactly where they were last week at the 28th position with a 22-31 record. Their offence is almost as poor as the Phillies given they scored three or less runs in 11 back-to-back games. The five run scoring game that
was played on Sunday was a breath of fresh air for the fans that seem to have lost hope for the entire season.
The Minnesota Twins are now a constant fixture at the bottom of the Power Rankings as they remain at last week’s 29th position with a 17-34 record. Carl Pavano, their supposedly good pitcher has a terrible ERA of 5.26 and remains winless in his
past six starts.
The Houston Astros have grown quite fond of their 30th position, the very last in the Rankings seeing that they have been here since last week and many week s before that with a 19-34 record. Not much can be expected from the rest of the team
if the comparatively better Carlos Lee managed to execute barely four home-runs in 56 at bats.
