Major League Baseball celebrates Mother’s Day - Part 1
With the whole world celebrating Mothers Day on Sunday, May 8 with fervor, the Major League Baseball athletes were not far behind. The players had plenty of hits in them and they all dedicated it to their mothers, or in their memory.
Adrian Gonzalez of the Boston Red Sox went three for five and belted out a home-run to go with that. He also had two RBI’s in a 9-5 victory over the Minnesota Twins. The best part is, that he did all of this while using a pink bat. "It's great to get a 'W'
on Mother's Day, and be able to go out there with the pink bats and do it in their acknowledgment," Gonzalez said.
Jorge Cantu was definitely the force behind the San Diego Padres’ victory over the Arizona Diamondbacks. He hit a three run homer that left everyone in the field amazed. He went on to say that throughout the game his mother was at the back of his mind and
he believed that she is always watching him.
Detroit Tigers’ Austin Jackson took out a pink bat from which he unleashed a two run homer along with two other hits that added considerably to the 5-2 victory over the Toronto Blue Jays. "My mom gets it," Jackson said of the pink bat. "Every year I write
a little something on there and send it to her. She's the one who brought me into this world, so it's definitely special to make this day for moms." Almost all of the Tampa Bay hitters used pink bats throughout the duration of the first order so that they
could each honour their mother in their own special ways. They ultimately reached a 5-3 victory over the Baltimore Orioles.
The pink sports gear that most of the players donned was not only for the Mothers Day Celebrations. It was also for Breast Cancer Awareness. The Rays’ manager, Joe Maddon explained by saying that almost everyone has had family members who have been affected
by cancer and that putting the cause out there and drawing attention to it is definitely a good thing. He said that the difference between the awareness now and twenty years ago is due to the different level of education prevalent now.
Third baseman for the Houston Astros, Chris Johnson had quite a comeback on Sunday with a home-run that he hit with his pink bat. He dedicated the home-run to his mother and then jokingly added that the two strike-outs were for her as well.
Once again, a pink bat is what the Colorado Rockies’ catcher Chris Iannetta used to single off in the sixth inning which effectively brought an end to Ryan Vogelsong’s almost perfect game.
