Major League Baseball celebrates Mother’s Day - Part 2
With Mother’s Day passing on May 8, the players of Major League Baseball decided to pay a tribute to their mothers after belting out hits in the field and decided to raise Breast Cancer Awareness through the wide spread use of pink coloured sporting gear
throughout the matches.
Chris Iannetta of the Colorado Rockies was sacrificed to second base by Jorge De La Rosa, the Rockies’ pitcher using a pink bat.
In the Texas Rangers and New York Yankees match that was held in Texas the Yankees outfielder Curtis Granderson belted out a home-run with his pink bat which contributed to the Bronx Bombers well deserved victory of 12-5. Even though Francisco Cervelli used
his pink bat to hit a few at-bats, his grand slam that came later on was with his usual bat. "That's for my mom," He said. "I wish that she could be here with me, but I hope that they were watching."
Another trend that was surfacing along with the pink coloured bats was one of the pink colored shoes. In honour of his mom, the Chicago Cubs’ outfielder Alfonso Soriano wore pink shoes. Marlon Byrd’s pink bat was engraved with the touching words, "Going
to bat for Emma Byrd" that honoured his mom. He went on to say, "I think about my mom every day. What she did for me, I can never forget. It's not just today. Today is a big day, but I think about her every day."
The very same emotions were echoed by Chase Headley who was the third baseman for the San Diego Padres. He believes that mothers have done a lot for everybody and his mom has always been there for him. He went on to say that his mother sacrificed a lot for
his sake so this is just one of the very small ways to thank her. He believed that it was a great honour for him to be in a position to be able to do that.
Breast Cancer Awareness was also publicised when Kyle Davies’s mother was called as a honourary speaker in Kansas City. She was a survivor of breast cancer. All of the players from the Kansas City Royals team were accompanied by breast cancer survivors to
the field.
For Kansas City Rookie, Eric Hosmer this was a very near and dear cause given that his wife’s mom has passed away due to breast cancer. His first extra base hit which was a double high off the centre of the wall was belted out using a pink bat and 12 of
the 18 hits that were belted out during the game between the Royals and the Oakland Athletics were with pink bats.
