Major League Baseball hires ambassadors to promote baseball abroad
Soccer or Football as its known abroad is one of the leading sports in the world, and while that comes without saying, there are some American sports that have been gradually picking up popularity.
However the influence of those sports spreads in regions in close proximity to the United States. The fact is that a sport like baseball can grow into something bigger. Though the potential is there, it is still a fledging sport outside the Americas. That
is one of the reasons why Major League Baseball (MLB) is employing ambassadors from various teams to promote the game, outside the American continent.
MLB Commissioner Bud Selig has already made a move towards enhancing the playoffs. Some may think the transition is a new bid to involve a larger audience down the road, but recent activities suggest that the MLB management is making an effort to spread
the game on a much larger scale.
Three baseball players from the MLB will be traveling around the globe, and will be try to reach out to different audiences with the message of baseball. The Milwaukee Brewers Prince Fielder will be heading for China, Curtis Granderson of the New York Yankees
will be heading over to New Zealand, while C. J. Wilson from the Texas Rangers will be going to South Africa.
Wilson recently told reporters about what he hopes to achieve on his travels, "I'm really excited to have the opportunity to travel to South Africa and spread some of the enthusiasm I've got for baseball to the kids there. Going to the World Series this
year has opened my eyes to the reach and possibilities to expand the game into new global markets. Since I'm going to be experiencing Cape Town for a few weeks, I'd be let down not to see the baseball over there, and hopefully my positive attitude as a player
can be translated across the ocean."
Granderson too described his thoughts, he said, "It is always an honour to be able to represent Major League Baseball, while working to not only teach others the game of baseball, but to also help this great sport grow on a global scale."
He added that there was a strong baseball infrastructure in New Zealand, and that the country possessed some of the greatest athletes in the world. Granderson said he was looking forward to working with the baseball authorities in New Zealand in a bid to
help them strengthen the sport at the national level.
