Major League Baseball player John Smoltz ready to debut on Nationwide Tour – Golf news
John Smoltz is eager to play his first tournament on the Nationwide Tour as he tees off at the South Georgia Classic.
Smoltz, who has played 21 seasons in the Major League Baseball, is turning towards another sport and is very confident about it. The 43-year-old is playing courtesy of a sponsor’s exemption.
Apart from his caddie, Smoltz will have no one to rely on as he plays golf in Valdose, Georgia.
“I don’t want to step on anyone’s toes,” Smoltz said. “I’m not looking to take anybody’s spot who is aspiring to be a Tour professional. I have a lot of respect for everybody who does what they do on the Nationwide Tour. I’m not afraid to fail, but failure
is right there. I know it’s not easy. I just want to see what it’s like. I want to know what my body feels like. I want to know if that tension creeps up. I just want to see what that’s like.”
Having played for Atlanta Braves for most part of his career, Smoltz has gone through a lot, but this weekend his fans would see him play like a golfer. Even though he played baseball most of his life, he played golf with teammates Greg Maddux and Tom Glavine.
Recently, Smoltz was honoured to tee off with the fourteen-time major championship winner, Tiger Woods. Woods said that Smoltz is an incredible player and the fact that he is a good golfer was all the more impressive.
With Smoltz shooting 69 to 67 in the same day, the former number one golfer, Woods was surely impressed. Woods said that not many amateurs can do that and with someone doing exceptionally well in two sports at a time was just phenomenal.
Even though he is enthusiastic about golf as well, Smoltz has not really said anything about playing on the Champions Tour. With just seven years to go until the big 50, Smoltz thinks that is a long shot. With the chances of him joining the Champions Tour
being a billion to one, John Smoltz just wants to focus on Nationwide and do well in the upcoming tournament.
