Major League Baseball players not to take tobacco on the field – MLB News
The Major League Baseball players will not take smokeless tobacco packages with them in a park when the fans are present in the field, but can take it during the games, as reported by the major newspaper giving reference of the baseball’s new labour deal,
finalised on Tuesday, November 22.
The condition was imposed after health related groups and some advocates, among them were the members of Congress, claimed the use of tobacco or chewing it in the park can cause serious damage to the thinking of the kids watching television at home. The
players union and DrugFree.org along with the baseball commissioner’s office has joined to initiate the campaign nationwide.
"Our members understand that this is a dangerous product, there are serious risks associated with using it," union head Michael Weiner said. "Our players felt strongly that those were appropriate measures to take but that banning its use on the field was
not appropriate under the circumstances."
Several players, who are ready to participate in the campaign, have already started spreading the message in the media. New York Yankees’ Curtis Granderson, Baltimore Orioles’ starting pitcher Jeremy Guthrie and free agent C.J. Wilson are top contributors.
The campaign will also include a training session for chain smoking players to help them give up this habit.
The U.S. Senators, who had shown interest to fire up a tobacco free campaign, started by the group called Tobacco-Free Kids and are now hopeful for the desired results.
"Major League Baseball made the right decision today in choosing to implement stricter rules for smokeless tobacco on the field and off the field," said d**k Durbin of Illinois.
The president of the campaign, Tobacco-Free Kids, Matthew L. Myers stated that he has received a considerable follow up, especially after asking to ban tobacco use; the restriction has shown a dramatic progress.
The contract is a major step towards the elimination of the use of the smokeless tobacco from the ballgame and Major League Baseball has contributed to eradicate this issue from society, stated Matthew in a statement. Tobacco has been used in the game for
a long time, but now the conditions are different and healthier lifestyles are preferred for projecting a positive image to the fans, especially the younger ones.
