Major League Baseball turns down New York Mets’ no-hitter appeal for R.A Dickey - MLB Update
MLB's executive vice president Joe Torre turns down New York Mets manager Terry Collins' appeal for no-hitter, maintaining that the game cannot be anything but a one-hitter.
To this, starter R.A Dickey is comforted believing that if the decision had come in his favour, he will not have been happier. It was so because fans will have known him more than due to their appeal to MLB than his actual mastery for throwing no-hitter
game.
Similarly, Collins stated that the decision was not a surprise and they were almost sure about the outcome beforehand. They made the attempt just for the sake of keeping up with the spirit of baseball.
Dickey is going through an ideal season. His performance has made him a part of the discussion about players who are going to make the All-Star Game. While the rest of Mets’ starters in rotation have been mediocre, Dickey has stood up for a number of times.
Throwing couple of games without conceding any score, he is bringing laurels for the club that the Mets have not had in years.
When questions were raised about why the Mets went for appeal when it was just to prove wastage of time, Collins defended that doing so was in line with rules. Whenever there is confusion about hit or an error, process allows teams to have things clarified
from MLB. As they did exactly the same, he had no reservations.
"Somebody said, 'Well, the Cardinals didn't ask for a review of Johan's no-hitter,'" Collins said. "Well, that is not the process. The process says that you can now appeal if it is a hit or an error. "It is not an appeal if a ball is fair or foul. You don't
do that. So we took advantage of the process, just like anyone else does in a process."
Using the word “relieved”, Dickey was fairly satisfied on the ruling. For him, keep putting up great performances throughout the season is more important.
"I'm relieved," said Dickey.
Irrespective of the ruling by MLB, the Mets are contented, believing they have at-least tried and attempted for no-hitter. Right now, they will like to steady their quest in the season and improve winning percentage.
