Major League Soccer: Henry states his ambition to win
Thierry Henry, the legendary former Arsenal striker sealed his move to New York Red Bulls in MLS on the 14th of July 2010. In doing so, Henry has become the second former Premier League player in recent years to make a move to MLS in the twilight of his career. Before Henry, it was David Beckham who moved to the L.A club L.A Galaxy from Real Madrid.
Henry, who transferred to Barcelona in 2007 from Arsenal, said at his unveiling as a New York Red Bulls player that his move to MLS marked a start of a new chapter as far as his life and career are concerned. He also said that it was an honor for him to play for a club such as the Red Bulls.
Henry also expressed his wishes to win New York’s first MLS title with the club. He also commented about Red Bull’s commitment to soccer locally and internationally, saying that these values will help him and others at the New York club succeed.
Erik Soler, who is Red Bull’s general manager as well as their sporting director, remarked on the occasion that Henry is not only a world class player but also a winner. Soler added that these characteristics will only improve the Red Bull’s squad.
Dietmar Beiersdorfer, Head of Red Bull Global Soccer stated that Henry is a proven winner and that he is one of the most recognizable faces in soccer over the past fifteen years. He also stated that Henry’s pedigree as an international footballer is second to none. Henry said, during his presentation at the Red Bull Arena in New York that he was at the MLS club to win.
He stated that, he is a competitive person and also displayed his trust in the Red Bulls by saying he is confident that the club will put out a team which can win things. He also very graciously, thanked MLS and the Red Bulls for giving him the opportunity to play in America. He expanded on his wishes to play in America by saying that he hopes that the crowd here in U.S.A would enjoy his skills as a footballer.
He said that for the past four to five months, his brain was focused on the fact that his future was in the MLS. He also expressed his love for the city of New York. He said that he loved the city itself and wanted to represent it. He also stated that the decision to do so was not a difficult one for him.
Henry also remarked that the players in MLS are playing some fantastic football. He said that in his tours to U.S.A with Barcelona, he had played against some quality oppositions such as Seattle and even Red Bulls itself. He also said that it is difficult to compare the European leagues with the MLS.
Henry, who recently also declared his retirement from international football after an abysmal World Cup in South Africa with the France national team saying that, many of his colleagues back home want to join MLS at some stage of their career as well. Henry only played a part time role with his previous club Barcelona in the last season, only making 32 appearances in all competitions.
