  1. The Adeile penguin is the one that most people think of when they hear "penguin".

It's fairly smallish, black back, white front. Bald head (no feathers). Reddish/black beak. Excellent swimmer.

Also noted to be a comical animal. Likes to "show off" for humans by sliding and doing funny penguin tricks. This was noted by Admiral Adeile Byrd, who henced named the birds during his sojourn to the Antarctic. His crew got a big kick out of them.

Emepror penguins (as their name implies) are the regal penguins. Very large and tall, mostly black with a small white area on their front. Black beak with a yellow tip. Occasional yellow splotches in the feathers if they're younger...

Most notable (besides their size) is the plum of black, yellow and purple feathers sticking out of their head. Looking somewhat like a crown, this gave them the "emperor" tag... also by virtue that the color purple has long been known as the "Emperors color" stemming from the Caesars in ancient Roman times.

In pop culture, Emperor penguins were featured in the movie "March of the Penguins".

Adeile were in the popular childrens book "Mr. Poppers Penguins", and on display in Seaworld (Orlando, Florida).

Both are know for their peculiar mating habits, whereby the males sit on the eggs and the females hunt for food.

  2. The Adelie penguin is the stereotypical penguin. With its white 'tuxedo shirt' front, and the white ring around its eyes, the bird has a handsome, yet comical appearance. Its beak is reddish with a black tip.
