I'm doing a project on religion in Venezuela. What are some names of famous churches in Venezuela. How about Jewish temples? What kind of ancient native religions are there?

  1. Hi!

The main cities in Caracas have the most importan chuches, architecturally and historically, that is.

In Caracas there is la Catedra de Caracas (The Caracas Cathedral) which is probably the most important one in the city. The is also de San Francisco Church, The Holy Chappel (Santa Capilla) -which was made to imitate Paris' Saint Chapelle, and the Santa Teresa Basilica.

In Maracaibo (Venezuela's 2nd most important city -Zulia State) you'll find la Iglesia de la Chinita (Chinita's Church) which is the temple of the Virgin of the Chiquinquirá (the matron of the city).

The Matron of Venezuela is the Virgin of Coromoto. her temple is built in the Portuguesa State, on the same spot where the second appearance of the Virgin was supposed to have occurred. This is a very modern temple, that was inaugured in the 1990's by the Pope John Paul II.

Barquisimeto City's cathedral  (Lara State) is also very modern and worth seing as well as the little church of San Rafael de Mucuchies in Merida State. This last one was made by hand by a local and the rocks on it  are sustained together by their own weight. Is a really beautiful sight.

You can find pictures of all of these and more here: http://www.venezuelatuya.com/religion/ig...

About Jewish temples... Caracas doesn't have that many. If I'm not mistaken there are two main temples in the city and they are not enough for the Jewish population. In fact, for the holy days, whoever wants to go actually needs to pick up a ticket first to guarantee a chair. That should give you an idea.

Venezuela's main religion is Roman Catholic, because of the Spanish conquerors and influence. Before this, the natives Venezuelan were politheist: they believed in various God's mainly derived from nature forces.

    Goodluck!

  3. venesuela is a catholic country since they got all the spanish influences, "La catedral" in Caracas downtown is quite known. There are also Christians (Evangelicos they say), and of course Jewish and muslims but very few of them. There a sinagogue but I don't remember the name, not a big fan of religion.
