Major downside of working for a large company...?

I have worked at a very large corporation for almost 2 years now. I was very excited at first to get the job because you get so many extras when working for a large company like company perks and cheap healthcare. Well I noticed one major downside is raises. Every year each employee is rewarded with a measly 3.5%. I always thought that the more money a company made and bigger they were, the more they could afford to give their employees. No matter how hard I work or how many additional duties I take on, I only get the small 3.5%. WTF?? My last job was for a very small firm that consisted of 6 people, but I got 2 separate 5K raises within a year for hard work and a bonus. Unfortunately, the business owener retired and closed.

Are large corporations just trying to s***w their employees? I work in accounting so I know they could afford to bump people up a few extra thousand every year. Why don't they? Its no wonder the turnaround is so bad and no one stays very long.

  1. Bigger picture question is;  are you happy working in that operation?  I've worked at large companies for years and realized, that I hated the work environment of constant turnover, lack of team spirit, etc.

Consider going back to a smaller more entrepreneur shop. I did and am now a lot happier.

  2. As I see it, if you know you will like the job then there is a secondary consideration. Life in a large company or corporation is a 'dog eat dog' environment. If you can handle the undercutting and back stabbing you will be satisfied. If you want to get to the top and you don't mind stepping on your best friend's face to do it you can make lots of $$ and gain a lot of power. Be sure you know what you are doing regardless of which way you go. The $$ goes to investors, not employees.

  3. Yes large corporations are usually about gaining more profit for themselves, meaning the people at the top. Not the people down at the bottom.  Gotta love the perils of our capitalistic market but it's not always this way.
