  1. I am majoring in Elementary Education to teach children in the primary school-age. The rewards you would normally get is seeing a child understand what you are teaching them. I am planning on teaching grade 4.

  2. I've been teaching secondary school for 22 years.  I've taught grades 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, and 12.  I taught English for 21 of those years, and this year, I got to teach history (and I get to do it next year too).  I LOVE secondary students for various reasons:

7th graders are still young and easily impressionable

8th graders are starting to develop real personalities

9th graders are scared and nervous about being in high school, and they are developing a sense of humor (bad thing about this grade - it's a time when lots turn 16 and decide to drop out)

10 graders are just fun to be around and the literature curriculum is fun for me

I like 11th graders, but I HATE teaching American lit.

12th graders are my favorites because most of them really want to learn (so they can graduate) and I LOVE British lit.

The only bad thing about teaching secondary school is having to deal with apathy of parents and students.  When you have one or both who see no value in education, then it's just useless to try to teach.  Also, some students have so many family and personal problems (abuse, pregnancy, homelessness, etc.) that school is the LAST thing on their minds (as well it should be).  They are concentrating on SURVIVING (sometimes literally) and have no time for school.

  3. Well, that depends - there are many different education majors most schools. There's early childhood education preschool - grade 2; elementary education K-5; and Secondary Education 5-12 (where you also have to pick a particular subject). Decide around what age group you would like to work with and choose your major from there.

I'm about to be in my 2nd year of secondary education. I find it very rewarding - I already had an internship at a middle school and helped some struggling kids.

I think being an education major and getting the field experience is the best way to decide if education is for you.

  4. I honestly don't know why anyone chooses to major in education. I think it's a lot better to minor in education, complete the teaching requirements for your state, and major in a subject that gives you a good foundation in the field of your choice. (An exception to this would probably be elementary education though.)

As far as the job market goes, math and science teachers seem to be in highest demand. If you're interested in liberal arts, English seems much more in demand than social studies or history. ESL and special education credentials are also highly sought after.
