Makarova/Vesnina tumbles over Dulko/Suarez to cruise into semis – Mutua Madrid Open 2012
Russian junction, Ekaterina Makarova and Elena Vesnina, rallied past the Argentinean veterans, Gisela Dulko and Paola Suarez, in three sets at the Mutua Madrilena Madrid Open 2012 on Thursday. They summed up a 6-7(5), 6-2, 10-5 victory against the Argentineans
to book a spot in the final four at this WTA (Women’s Tennis Association) blue clay court event taking place in Spain.
Makarova and Vesnina showed amazing co-operation and after cashing in all three break chances, they sealed the victory in one hour and 34 minutes. The winning pair not only produced a better first serve share of 65 per cent as opposed to their rivals’ 61
per cent and superbly marked 33 out of 42 points on it. They also committed fewer unforced errors and double faults which made the difference.
Dulko and Suarez made a sloppy start at this Premier Mandatory event and suffered the first blow in the fifth game to fall at 2-4. However, they put their head in the game and enforced a tie-breaker after recovering in the eighth game. The Argentineans edged
past their opponents in it and bagged the opener with a 7-6(5) win.
The blooming Russians re-structured their strategy in the second set earned the critical break in the second game to leap to a 3-0 lead. They held their composure after that and not only pluck their successive serves but capitalised on another break chance
in the last game to seal the equaliser by winning six games to two.
Makarova and Vesnina carried their rhythm in the super tie-breaker and jumped to a 5-2 lead before pulling out the decider with a 10-5 score line.
All in all, the winning tandem manipulated a better first serve share of 65 per cent as opposed to the Argentineans’ 61 per cent and impressively clicked 33 out of 42 points on it.
Up next for the Russians is the Spanish collaboration, Nuria Llagostera Vives and Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez, who stunned second seeds, Kveta Peschke and Katarina Srebotnik, in straight sets to set-up this battle. The local stars lost their serve once but
broke the seeds’ serve three times to steal the show.
