For example I need to have text above and below a picture, without having it covering ANY of the picture itself? How would I do that in Adobe Photoshop CS3

  1. Open your picture in Photoshop. Under the Image Menu, click on "Canvas Size"  Change the height to whatever size you prefer. On the bottom you can pick the color of the added space.  Hope this helps.

  2. I'm no Photoshop expert but here's how I have done it.

If the picture you're working with is a '.jpg' file, first open the picture and save it as a '.psd' file. (This may not be necessary but it's what I do.)

Click on Image > Resize > Canvas Size.  Add some height to the canvas size value, then click 'OK' to create a top and bottom margin. With the default setting, doing this will create equal top and bottom margins. (If you want only a top margin, click on the down-arrow in the Canvas Size pane. If you want only a bottom margin, click on the up-arrow.)

Select the text tool and enter the text you want in the margin areas.

You can then save your picture with the text added as either a '.psd' or a '.jpg' file.
