  1. Most hardware stores have pulleys, they don't cost a lot. You need to fasten the pulley to the tree somehow so it hangs there, tying it on a branch is simple, many pulleys have a hole on one end for this. Then you make sure you have enough rope so that when you lower the plant the rope will go from the plant up to the pulley and back down to the ground. You will need something to tie the rope to so it holds the plant up in the air. Use a cleat for this, and you just wrap the rope around it in a couple of figure eights. There are more expensive things for that but a cleat works fine. The hard part will be figuring out to what or how to fasten the cleat, unless you're okay with putting a couple of big screws in your tree. If you're not, I'd suggest clamping a couple of pieces of wood on either side the tree with ready-rod, and fasten the cleats there. If your plants are small enough, perhaps you could hang a few from a board so they all go up and down together, that means fewer ropes, pulleys and cleats. Use synthetic rope; manila or hemp won't last if it stays damp.
