Question:

Make a smoke detector stop beeping?

I finished my basement a year ago. It would appear that a smoke alarm was left in the ceiling somewhere and has now started beeping. The Smoke detectors run off both AC and Battery power.

I tried turning off the breaker that is giving the unit AC power but it is still beeping. Is there anything I can do ?

Also I have no idea where this thing is and the sound is so short I cant pin down the location. If I was confident I knew where it was I could cut a whole and pull it out. Any suggestions on how to locate it ?

  1. They also have a battery. If you change the battery, and the sound continues, change the detector.

  2. It sounds like your smoke detector is NOT hooked up to the AC power lines, and the battery is going dead, as others have suggested.  You can check that by turning off the main power switch.  If you had the ceiling finished by someone else, maybe they will remember where the smoke detector is located.

You could just put up with the beeping until it stops - after the battery has completely died - which is what I would do.  Or you could buy a cheap stethoscope and go around your basement listening to the ceiling in order to locate it.

  3. Your battery is definately going dead. When it dies the beeping will stop. To ease your mind, drop in to any electrical wholesaler and read- the instructions for any hard wired alarm and you will find it is the battery. Do be aware though that if the alarm was not covered or sealed that dust can set off an alarm.

  4. sounds like youll have to wait it out or someone cut the power on and off while you look listen and try to retrieve and smash it to oblivion after all that trouble you have earned the right

  5. smoke detectors are  usually in the same place,  by the door , hindge side, a foot or two off the wall

  6. If it is hooked to A/C, cut the power and it will drive the battery dead faster.  Or light a fire and make it really go off and that will drive the battery dead the quickest.

  7. it's beeping because the battery is dying.  once the battery loses all it's charge, it will stop.

  8. MORE THAN LIKELY ,ITS GOING TO BE LOCATED ALONG THE SAME WIRE RUN AS THE CEILING LIGHT IS RUN,GET A VOLTAGE LO CATER AND RUN ALONG THE CEILING,FROM THE LIGHT OUT,THIS SHOULD GIVE YOU AN IDEA OF WHERE THE SMOKE DETECTOR IS.

  9. its cause the battery is almost dead
