Make my D's and F's turn into B's and A's?

School starts tomorrow, and I'm going into the 9th grade. I'm taking Algebra I part II, and I just want to get an A in there. Actually, I'd be happy with a B or C. Last year in Part I, I got D's and F's. Those were the only grades you would ever see me get! My dad bought me a super expensive TI-84 Silver Edition calculater, hoping it would motivate me, and it might, lol. My brain is very slow paced when it comes to math, and I just need some help....lol. I'm probably going to do this after school thingy, but I just need help on how I can make it less boring and hard, and actually like it!

  1. This is not actually a question as it's written in command form. Notice how the first word "make" is not a question word like 'can' or 'how' but rather 'make', which is a command. Simply ending the sentence with a question mark isn't sufficient to overcome the base syntactical error. Had you written instead something like "Can you make my Ds and Fs turn into Bs and As?" it would have been more possible to answer, however no more enlightening as the answer would come out to be something like "no."

On a more serious note the ti-84 can pretty much do algebra for you and if that's what you're going into for 9th grade do not hesitate to learn how to use your calculator. (yes, it's spelled calculator)

  2. Could your Dad afford a tutor? Depending on where you live, there may be quite a pool of people to choose from. There are retired teachers and college students who would like some extra money. Paid tutors can be had for 20 dollars an hour and up. Also, the National Honor Society (really top students) in our high school ran service projects which matched a great student with one who needed help.

Be aggressive and as soon as school gets under way, make an appointment with you guidance counselor (student services) and explain your problem to that person. She or he would probably have ideas.

The only thing that can't be done is to hire someone who teaches in your high school to tutor. (Tha would be double dipping.) But, frequently even your current teachers will offer group tutoring before or after school, during studyhall, or during lunch. Just ask them.

  3. Only you can motivate yourself. You have to want the grades bad enough and seek out the extra help that you will need to get them. Notify the teacher as soon as school starts that you struggle with math and may seek extra help from him/her as the year progresses. They will be impressed with your proactive approach and will be more likely to make time for you. Also ask if there is a student who has taken the course before that may be willing to tutor you.
