Make the house smell fresh?

Question

Whats a good way to add a nice fresh smell to the house without using scented candles, or lots of sprays? I have kids and candles are not a safe option and i don't like sprays because they last like 5 minutes, even the febreze doesn't last long. my friend puts a stick-ups on the front of a window fan, but i wouldn't want to do that in winter. I would like an idea i can use all year long.

keep the place clean...use an exhaust fan all the time..takes the smells out.............get rid of rugs.

Simple, Potpourri (good quality) works best all year round.

No danger, no chemicals, and can be placed in a decorative manner.

dryer sheets

put them on the heater vents in winter, and on the fan in summer

poke a hole in it and attach it with a twist-tie

You realize your nose grows accustomed to any fragrance in your house and you no longer smell it.  Air circulation is a big helper along with clean house especially floors and upholstery. Even in winter you need to "air out the house" with open window for a few minutes at least.  I set a fan on the window sill to hurry the air entering so I can close up quickly.

When you vacuum do you do the furniture?  It will help along with regular cleaning.  For inbetween cleanings, sprinkle baking soda on the carpet before bed, get the kids off to school and vacuum up the soda before they get home.  

My mother had a canister vacuum.  She put a wad of cotton at the outlet port and saturate it with perfume as it was the only "scent" she had on had.......she probably thought vanilla too expensive.  I knew immediately when she had been vacuuming.  

You can make your own liquid potpouri with water and spices.  Fill a small pot with water, add orange peel...just the orange, not the white stuff underneath, cloves, cinnamon, nutmeg, whatever you like...maybe vanilla.  Warm it up and let simmer.  It can be reheated several days.
