Make unfinished basement livable for college kids?`?

My friend is willing to live in my unfinished basement. How should i fix it up so its not so gloomy. Carpert maybe staple sheets to the wooden beams and hand drapes down to make walls? What are your ideas. we are renting a house and dont have much money thanks
