I agree with Lou, felting needles are triangular shaped shafts with downward pointing barbs.  They are quite fine and, while easily breakable, can be used after they have their tips broken off for a while and are fairly inexpensive.  If you find yourself breaking them or snapping them in the middle you need to improve your technique because you are forcing them and bending them in the work.
