has anyone noticed that a lot of corperations are cashing in on global warming? NBC, car companies makeing hybrids, Bp pushing alternitive engergy, energy star appliances, amongst others. It's enough to make me wonder if global warming isn't some giant corporation plan to help sell stuff to people who don't really need it. It's been done before. anyone else feel that way?

  1. No, because I've studied the scientific evidence.

I can see how you might come to that conclusion if you haven't looked at the science.  However, the fact that some companies are smart enough to make a buck while helping to reduce our greenhouse gas emissions has nothing to do with the science behind global warming.

  2. global warming is all a scam made up by uncircumcised men to make money!

  3. we can thank the English for this one. the queen wanted to push nuclear power so she paid a lot of money to find connection between coal plants any negative implications. alas someone found that in the middle of what scientist thought would be a upcoming ice age the city tempters have increased. people fail to see that as a city grows in naturally radiates more and more heat. not the world just the city. but that does not matter. only time will tell... i say give it 100years and when no significant change in the world is present people will se that global warming is just a trillion dollar mistake and corporations will find something different to push to help sell more toasters.

thor - how do you sell a toaster to someone that has a working toaster? you tell them that its waste full and uses more electricity, then a new one. why do they care if they spend money on power or on a new toaster well you tell them that power is used by coal plants, coal plants heats the environment and you kids will die because you didn't want to by a new toaster... tell me what NBC gains from searing you?

its called terrorism.. people like you just bend over for it.

  4. Global warming is real and we have been making it worse.  Unfortunately, I fear Big Business will only start doing something about it when they see a chance to make more money stopping it than ignoring it.  we all better pray they see profit soon!

  5. Wow, thats the stupidest question/answer I've heard in awhile.   You ever notice how oil companies cashed in on people needing oil to run their vehicles?   Or how car companies cashed in on people wanting larger vehicles?   When electricity came out how many companies cashed in on that new technology instead of making their products in the old way before electricity?    Companies are in business to make money; they won't build something people don't want, but will build things people do want.

  6. Oh yea, it starts out with a fanatic politician who publicly promises billions of dollars in research money in proving global warming.  The result, as with any profession, lures a bunch of other fanatics bent on profit.  These people actually believe in these scientists and also believe that science is not for sale....  Very, very sad!

  7. Car companies cashing in on global warming by making hybrids?   Yeah, in spite of themselves.   How can you say that?  They have fought against change tooth and nail, so now they're exploiting it?   Quite an imagination.

BP?  They do seem to be investing in alt energy more than other oil companies.  BP solar is a big maker of panels.   So?...

What you are actually seeing is big businesses waking up to the fact that it's more cost effective to do things more sustainably.  Walmart is putting solar on their roofs, so are many Silicon Valley companies.  Is that cashing in?   Solar stocks were one of the hottest sectors in the stock market last year.  Google is investing $1 billion for developing alternative energy.

There is a lot of oppurtunity in alternative energy and clean technology.   In the long run it will both save money and boost the economy with new economic development.

The REALLY big money is still mostly on the other side of the issue.  Oil for instance.  Did you know that there are huge hidden costs to our oil addiction?   One estimate is over $800 billion a year.   Huge oil and gasoline subsidies are a big part of it.  Around $100 billion annually for military protection of oil shipments.  Hundreds of billions in environmental and health costs.  All this would add about $8 to the price of a gallon of gasoline if you paid it at the pump.  You still pay it, but it's hidden in the economy and taxpayer money.

And I hear people complaining that the price of gasoline includes 65 cents in taxes or whatever it is.  If they only knew.

And then there are all the geopolitical problems with oil, like wars in the mideast.

By comparison, alternative energy is cheap.

When you hear that solar or whatever is too expensive and needs tax credits, they aren't including these hidden costs in the equation.

We already have solar thermal plants that can generate power at prices competitive with gas and coal.   1% of our southwest desert  could power the whole country.  No hidden costs, no fuel to import, mine, transport, store, or burn.

1% of the Sahara Desert would power the whole world.

So you see,  it isn't like we don't have good alternatives.  It's the common sense and political will that is lacking.

Corporations don't have much trouble selling us stuff.  They don't need global warming to do that.

Our consumerism economy is why, and it is extremely wasteful.  Watch this video to see what I mean.  "The Story of Stuff"

There is no scam or hoax.  Sure there are unsrupulous businessmen who will try to sell anything to capitalize on a trend.  That doesn't mean that everyone who sees the oppurtunities is unsrupulous.

  8. There are always cynical folk like you around, aren't there!

The Corporations will jump on ANYTHING that will make money, and right now whatever technology is available to help with GW is potentially ripe for exploitation.  It's how our system works!  You should be here in the UK, where our leaders are s******g as much as they can out of us in the name of 'Green'!  As if ANY measures we take will make a difference to slow GW.  WE are being screwed in the name of 'Green', when compared with America, China and India (to name just three) The 'lil ole UK  is totally INSIGNIFICANT!

  9. I agree with you. I've seen many things that I felt were underhanded regarding this issue. Certainly, Big Al's motives are a little less than honorable. I get a little tired of the believers always bringing up big oil and how they fund skeptical research. I don't see anything wrong with the oil industry funding research, who else will? People who say there's no bias in this government research are just being ignorant, or down right dishonest. I believe it would be much more difficult to be skeptical. Science has lost all objectivity on this issue. It is a sad state of things.

  10. With oil prices approaching $110/barrel and gasoline pump prices pushing $3.50/gallon, you think automakers coming out with higher MPG cars (hybrids) is somehow bad?  I'd think you'd welcome a chance to pay a smaller part of your budget for transportation.

I don't know what you mean when you say "it's all been done before", but the science supporting global warming is pretty clear.
