Okay, so for a really long time...My dream has been to become a makeup artist...I told my mom and she got really angry at me, saying things like "No! You go to such a good Private School and Blah Blah Blah..." So i was angry and a lot of my hopes were down. I just really wanted to maybe do makeup on other people or show people how to do it...

Id sort of like to do videos on youtube, but i dont think my mom would let me!

Or if I worked at like Sephora or Mac or something, do i need to get training and stuff? Please help me =(

1) Is there a way I can ask my mom later on if I could do things like that on Youtube or something?

2) If i want to work as a like summer-job part time at Sephora or something, do i need training? Say im 16-18 years??

  1. i think that you can be whatever you wanna be and by the time you get older you will be an adult and make decissions for yourself! so i say go for it =]

    good luck!!

  2. In the uk we have beauticians courses at college, (which are a lot harder than people realise). How about seeing if you can do a course like that to start, and see if you enjoy it?

Talk to your mum and see if she would agree to you doing videos for youtube while you finish school. She might come to an agreement with you on it.

    Good luck

  3. You need a cosmetology license to work at Sephora or MAC if you want to apply make up

  4. You don't need a "cosmetology license" to work at Sephora or MAC. Cosmetology licenses are for people who are gonna be doing waxing/bleaching/pedicure stuff at spas and salons.

If you want to just work at a makeup counter or makeup store, you simply need a certificate or transcript proving you took some sort of course. It doesn't have to be anything fancy or expensive. You can check your Yellow Pages for a beauty school in your area and take evening or weekend courses that focus only on makeup application. Just tell your mom you are taking classes for fun to see if you will like the career or not.

I took a course at my local college. It was held every Saturday for 10 weeks. For the final project, we had to do 10 makeovers on people with "before & after" pictures. I got an A+ and I just attach a copy of my "report card" with every resume I send out. I also add in pictures of my work (a portfolio). You can make your portfolio on a CD-ROM or just attach some color copies to your application/resume.

When you drop off your resume, be sure to be dressed professionally, and don't go too heavy on the makeup. You have to look presentable. Build up a portfolio of pictures and attach sample photos to your application. (It doesn't matter if it's mostly pics of your friends and family.) Makeup shops receive hundreds of applications, make yours stand out. Always ask to speak to the manager or supervisor. Never leave your resume with the random cashier or clerk.

If working in a shop doesn't work out, stick with it as a freelance artist. Do makeup for proms and weddings, or contact a proffesional makeup artist in your area and ask if you can "shadow" them as a part-time job. Make a business card and start a website. Eventually, with word-of-mouth, you will achieve your dream.

    Best of luck!

  5. aww why would your mom say that.i say just follow your dreams.you dont need a degree to work at mac. What you will need are pictures. Boys, girls, moms, friends whom ever will sit still. It's also a good idea to have day and evening looks. Show the other artists you are interviewing for you are versatile. You will more then likely have 3 to 5 interviews with different people. More then likely at a counter or store you aren't going to be working. Once hired you will go to M.A.C. school. They will show you how to do make-up their way. It is unlikely that without any experience you will be placed at a store. They usually start off new kids at counters in department stores. It's a process. But once hired it's a great opportunity to gain experience and build a resume. Again for any of these counters a degree isn't required and in cosmotology school they focus more on the care of skin then make-up application. They briefly go over the basics of make-up.Also try to ask your mom when shes all calm and happy. BTW you have to be 18 to work at M.A.C just to let you know

  6. I think you'd be a great makeup artist because you have such a strong will to do it.

    1) Tell your mom that this is what you want to do in life. And that you appreciate how much she cares about your education, not many mom's to that. A video on Youtube isn't such a big deal. Explain to her what exactly you will be doing; even ask for her help, so she knows her opinion is valued. Tell her it's just a hobbie; to put makeup video's up. Maybe in the future you'll change your mind, but probably not with your determination. In the end, what you want to be in your future is your decision.

2)If you want to want to work at Sephora, you just have to go to an interview. They will teach you makeup and stuff, but you probably won't get to do makeup right away. Later on, you'll get to.

Makeup application is a serious job. So your mom should understand, I wish I was as good as a makeup artist.

    Good Luck with everything :)
