Question:

Making Concrete/Cement Stepping Stones?

by  |  earlier

I have been reading up on making some "home made" stepping stones for my back yard, but I need help. I want something that will be smooth and that has a decorative design (not just round or square), but I don't want to spend $40-$50 on a mold. Can anyone give me some creative suggestions as to what I can use as a mold?

Also, what is the best type of concrete mix I should use to make these?

  1. Use your imagination for a mould and you can get dye to colour the mix.

  2. You can buy the molds at a lumber yard. They also have the bags of concrete made especially for stepping stones. You can also premix color into your concrete. The molds I found at McCoys were about 15 dollars.

  3. I would look into how much you are going to spend on this - you might find it is cheaper and less effort to buy something made commercially which may end up being more durable.

  4. use the silicone style cake molds, and spray them with a little Pam ....and get a very fine cement mix (without stones ...etc)

  5. You might even be able to rent these molds.  As far as the concrete mix, you can buy ready mix bags because you need the aggrigate for strength, or you can make your own mix with sand, portland cement, and whatever aggrigate that you want.

  6. My best advise is to buy them. You will have more in materials and labor than what you spend.

If you decide to DIY, use mortar mix which has no stones.
