Making DVD Movie backups?

Im tired of having to replace my dvds after a year because they get too scratched they won't play or will skip...Im going to buy a laptop with a dvd writer...to make a direct dvd backup,what would I need? i don't think its as easy as inserting a blank dvd r in one drive and inserting the dvd into the other...be as specific please...and I will pick a best answer.

    run both. Insert the disk. Use dvdshrink to back it up. You need to run dvd43 in the background or it wont read copy encryption on newer disks.

Well I had to buy this software from Bestbuy called "I copy dvd's 2".  I installed it and tried to backup my dvd's with that and it didn't work.  I looked around on the internet and found out that I would have to download something called "dvd43" in order to decode the discs.  So I did that and the two programs worked together great.  I did have a problem with some of my Disney discs though.  I think they use some hardcore encryption or something.
