I am currently coaching soccer team. I recently told the boys that we will start running at least 10 miles a week for the next couple weeks. One of the parents think it's a bad idea since the boys are only 12 and 13. What do you all think? anyone has a sources to recommend for good info regarding this subject?

  1. well i am 15. play 3 sports. football . lacrosse . ice hockey.

i play varsity for all 3 and im a freshmen.

even for me 10 miles a week is ridiculous. make it 5. a mile a day. with 2 days of down time

  2. What kind of a coach are you?

Do you plan on killing them first or something?

Cut that in half at least.

  3. It should be fine. When I was that age, I wasn't in the best shape but could still run the mile.

  4. 10 miles a week?  That's NOTHING.  I've seen a 7 year old girl run a 10 mile race, in one day.  And she finished before my mom.  It was crazy... but it is possible.

    10 miles per week = 2 miles a day for 5 days

If it's hard for the majority of them, start working up towards that.  If they really want to be on the team, then they will work hard.

Tell the parents to stop worrying, and that it's good for their son.  If they're not good runners yet, tell them to start training on their own.  Just make sure they stretch before AND after they run, and that they keep hydrated, but I think you know that.  And tell the parents that it's just 2 miles a day or whatever, and it won't sound as much.

I'm a 13 year old girl and I can run 6 miles without stopping, if I can do it, they can do it.

  5. That's a lot to do. Maybe cut it back!

  6. thats cruel

  7. thats only like.. one and a hlaf miles a day at apractice if they have it seven days a week. My sis is in gymnastics and does 3 miles a day. haha tell the parents to suck it up or take the kids off the team ;)

  8. maybe it should be less than 10, depending on if the boys are capable of running that far.

  9. I WOULD SAY ON 1 MILE AT EACH PRACTICE BECAUSE FOR SOME KIDS RUNNING A MILE IS SO HARD. ON AVERAGE PEOPLE SHOULD BE ABLE TO DO IT IN 8 MINUTES.

  10. thats good for usa n aussi since we r fat ppl we need a bitof it

  11. I agree with the post above me. Cut that in half, that is a lot.

  12. Sounds like a good idea. This will get the kids all that more fit and give them that much more endurance when they get older. Tell these parents if they want their kids to be winners, then pushing them to the limit is a necessity.
