Making a fleece blanket...

I'm planning for Christmas gifts, and I'd like to make some blankets. I'm thinking pretty standard two sided fleece blankets (not those that you tie together), I want them to be big enough to go on a bed and not just throw blankets. I'm thinking about fleece on one side and a cotton backing (in contrasting colors and/or patterns). To hold the 2 sides together (in addition to sewing them around the edges), I was thinking about buttons (think pillows with the buttons that pull the fabric downward), but I can't decide if that will be attractive, and I'm unable to find a website that can give me an idea of how it will look. Opinions would be helpful right about now.

  1. You could also use Embroidery thread to do your tie downs, since the buttons would make the blanket kinda heavy ;)))

  2. well if your going to do these blankets for anything bigger than a twin size, you'll need to piece the fleece together since it only comes about 60" wide. Same thing for the cotton backing (that's usually only 45" wide, but you can find some wider, just not as many color options). if you have a sewing machine, it would prolly be easier to do a bit of machine quilting. Just stitch big lines down the whole blanket (you can mark them with a ruler first to make the lines staright). if that's not appealing, i like your button idea. i think 1/2"-1" size buttons would prolly look the best.

  3. here is a link for a double no sew fleece blanket. They are so cosy when completed.
