Making a phone call from america to japan, help?

I have the number of my friend in Japan, now I want to call him. It is a Japanese number, on a home phone or cell phone, do i dial 1 before sending, or maybe 9? help! idk what to dial!

no........dial first   011 then country-code 81 and the city-code and then the number....!
