  1. First of all, I might contact the Experimental Aircraft Association. www.eaa.org. They have a tremendous wealth of experience in designing/building aircraft of all sorts.

You might want to start with a kit plane and see all that is involved in building. It is a slow process, even with a kit. A friend recently completed a high performance single from a kit. It took him approx 4 years of work to do so.

For some sample plans, contact Wag Aero at www.wagaero.com. They sell aircraft plans and it might give you a chance to see all that is involved.

  2. You need to go to school. The only thing that'll give you the necessary knowlege to design and build a plane from scratch is a degree in aeronautical engineering. An airframe maintenance certification would help as well. It's an incredibly complex process that requires extreme care. The internet just doesn't have enough reference material to teach you everything you need to know. You can't just weld some pipes together and put some sheet metal on it, either. You have to get everything right for it to fly and still follow a lot of rules to keep it legal. It's just too complex to read some instructions and put it all together without some serious experience. If you want to build an airplane, go to a local college and take some aviation maintenance courses. Then order a kit plane and assemble it. This saves you design time and assures that you're putting together a reliable, proven design. The whole process of a scratch build will take too much time and effort. Basically, you're not going to find all the info you need on the net. This stuff fills textbooks.
