I just have a basic sewing machine. Do you have any tips on making a seam on clothing?

  1. Yes.  Take a look here: http://www.diceyhome.free-online.co.uk/K...

  2. A few good rules of thumb

       1. Right sides of the fabric together

       2. Use a 5/8 inch seam allowance. Smaller down to 1/4 inch OK and used for quilting, but most patterns for clothing use 5/8

       3. Use a 2.5 stitch lenght or 12 stitches per inch.

4.. Back stitch at the start and end of every seam. Take 3 stitches back and then forward to secure the stitching

       5. Press seams open once sewn. Gives a better finished look.

       6. Over cast or serge seams. Each side of the seam will ravel on woven fabrics if not over cast. This can be done with a simple zig zag close to the cut edge of each side of the seam allowance.

       7. Relax and let the machine feed the fabrc through the machine. If you are pulling or pushing the fabric , you are not letting the machine do its job , results will be less than satisfactory.

  3. go down to your local sewing machine center and take a couple of basic classes. They cost only the price of the supplies usually. They supply everything needed including the machines.

I know Bernina and Janome stores have these classes, some others likely do too.
