Question:

Making an adapter to run a 220v a/c off a 220v dryer outlet.?

I have a porch that i would like to install a window a/c unit. The a/c that I have acquired is 220v (15 - 20 amp?) and has a 3 prong plug (imagine two minus signs above a period). The dryer receptacle has poles as well, two angled above a right angled slot. I would like to make an adapter to allow the a/c to plug into this outlet. My first thought was to make an adapter that had an outlet similar to my a/c in a junction box with a 1 ft. cord with a plug that matched dryer outlet. I'm only doing this so that i can run my a/c when im not drying my clothes and vice versa (i understand that you cannot have two 220v/240v appliances on one circuit). Thank you for any insight.

  1. Just go to an appl. center and get a pig tail for you dryer and mount it on the a c.......and save a life...........careful.......and good luck. nite

  2. The plugs are different for a reason and that is why you can't find an adapter. The ac will not be protected by the correctly sized breaker.

  3. Ok.. lets get one thing straight.  220v is not as forgiving as 110v.  If you make a mistake you can do some serious damage both to yourself and to the appliance.

Given that, for about $20 you can usually purchase a commercially available adaptor that will do the job for you.

Bottom line.. its not worth the risk.. go buy the adaptor.

  4. Just buy a 220 pigtail and install it to the a/c that will fit the plug. It's that easy.

You just can't dry clothes and run the a/c at the same time.

You'll have to do one or the other because you'll have only one place to plug them in.

  5. first reroute your dryer cord for easy access. go buy another dryer cord and wire it into your ac outlet ,then when you want to change from dryer to ac change cords...........tom
