He just turned six months so we're on the "4 day plan" with diff foods, making sure there are no allergies. I'm thinking of starting him on scallops or shrimps but I can't remember the rules .... Any opinions or suggestions would be great.

  1. Wait until 3 years of age.

"The two main concerns regarding feeding seafood to young children are that of potential allergy development and mercury exposure.

More than 90 percent of food allergies come from just a few sources: eggs, dairy, nuts, peanuts, wheat, fish, and shellfish. There is controversy about the best age at which to introduce nuts, peanuts, fish, and shellfish because unlike other food allergies, these allergies often last for a lifetime. The official recommendation is to wait to introduce these foods until after the first birthday, but some allergists are now recommending as late as 3 years, especially if there are food allergies in the family."

  2. at least a year.  make sure he's not allergic.

personally, i wouldn't give a baby shellfish at all.  that's just me.

  3. I was told to hold of on high allergen foods till 4 years from my allergist that includes peanut butter,  shellfish , seafood. The earlyer a child has these foods the higher the risk the child will have an allergy and the more sever allergy.

  4. In Australia it is not reccomended to introduce shellfish to after 2 years of age, incase of any allergies.  Giving my children who are now over 2 shell fish is not a regular thing, every now and then.

  5. def wait till he is a year old

  6. No way would I give a baby shell fish for the following reason: they are packed with cholesterol and if they contain salmonella your baby could actually die. Think about it, have you even read ANYWHERE that it's advised to give shell food to a baby? It's just too dangerous.
