Making beer?

Can I use a saltwater hydrometer to measure the gravity when Im making beer? The one that came with my kit broke.

  1. I agree with Alesmith....additionally, Hydrometers are one of the least expensive investments you'll make during your brewing adventures. Go ahead and just pick up a brewing hydrometer for the aforementioned bonus information.


  2. Yeah it is good to use for your brewing but wash the darn thing off. It is an instrument calibrated to water and not sugar or salt. If we compared two solutions made of equal weights one of salt and the other sugar they will have different S.G. because they have different densities. I have never seen a saltwater hydrometer but I figure it is calibrated with very similar markings. Your good to go.

  3. It should work since a hydrometer is a generic tool but you might want to make sure its range covers 1.000-1.080 at least.  "Brewing hydrometers" just tend to have bonus information on them like rough ABV read-outs and things of that nature.

  4. idk know detail about it. I believe it is ok, as long as it is a hydrometer.
