Question:

Making friends in Italy?

I'll be in Roma for a year and I have no doubt that I'll be able to make plenty of male friends, but I want to make female friends also. I won't be going to school, but working. Normally I probably would have met them through school, but where I'm working there isn't going to be alot of Italian females around my age (I'm 19). Here in the states you usually make new friends through work or school or through friends you already have. But, I'm going over there having no body yet.....so, how do you make female friends?

  1. If you'll be in Rome, there are many interesting things you could do to meet new friends: go to a Cineforum (many Movie Theatre present a series of movies, usually during the week, preceeded or followed by a debate with a movie critic), which are often  frequented by yooung people your age. Go to concerts or places where people your age meet. Another idea would be to join a gym or a course of some sort (ceramics, dance, anything really!). If you are catholic, just go to the church near where you'll be staying: they all have youth groups that meet there and they don't just pray!

let me know if you need any detail

  2. All you have to do to make friends in Italy is to make an effort to learn the language. If you already speak Italian your all set. If you can't make friends in Italy you're probably a leper.

  3. Just say 'Hi!' in Italian.

[I met some Italian people in Vancouver, BC. They were all very friendly. I wouldn't worry about it.]

When I lived in Canada for the first time, I was worried about making friends a little bit, too. But someone actually came to my dinner table at a youth hostel and start talking to me.

If you are working, you have no choice but talk to the people in the office. When you have a question about work, you can ask a female person around your age ;-)

  4. Hi,,, where you are working ... you should meet some women, girls there maybe... ???  or go to the Hard Rock Cafe.. there are some nice girls working there.. its a starting place....

Watch out for the Pick Pockets in Rome !!!!  they are very good at their trade... i kid you not.......

    good luck

  5. Have you ever thought about staying in a hostel? My sister traveled across Europe and stayed in hostels. You might want to research before you stay. Some are pretty nasty, but alot are really cool, and you can sleep in a all girl dorm and meet a lot of new females.
