Making homemade bread crumbs?

Recipe calls for spices and one cup of bread crumbs. How many pieces of bread needed to make one cup of crumbs?

  1. Depends on the size of the bread loaf slices but 3-4 slices should do it; I usually zap them in the microwave so they will dry and crumble up easier.

  3. Choose a bread of your choice such as plain, whole wheat, sourdough, French, rye or even any sweet bread. Use fresh or old bread. Take out as many pieces as you want depending upon your need.

    Place bread pieces on a baking sheet and put in the oven at a temperature of 175 to 200 degrees F. For a more toast-like flavor, increase the temperature a bit. Let the baking sheet sit in the oven for 30 minutes or until the bread is fully dry.

    Remove the bread from the oven and let cool. Next, put the bread in a food processor or a blender and grind to make fine dry bread crumbs.

    Take another approach with fresh bread. Tear the bread into bite size pieces and crumble them in a food processor. Work with high and low pulses of the food processor to obtain fine or course bread crumbs. Place the crumbs in a clean non-stick frying pan and toast until they are golden brown. Remove to a plate and let cool.

  4. About three slices should do it. Remember to dry the bread for a while in a countertop oven at about 250F--about 15 minutes--not to brown it but to dry it out so it crumbs in the blender real well.

  5. If you're using regular type bread, not the thin sliced, one slice makes about 3/4 cup of soft crumbs done in a blender.  If you're using a food processor to make fine crumbs, one slice makes about 1/4 cup of fine crumbs.

    I'd do 4 slices if making the fine crumbs.  You can always put any extra crumbs in a zip bag and store in your freezer.
