Question:

Making international calls from Korea to USA?

I want to make international calls from Seoul to USA -

Is this the way to do it?

001 + 1 + Area Code + Telephone#

So for Alexandria, Minnesota I should press 320 for the area code, and for Boulder, Colorado - 303? Am I correct?

But what procedure should I follow in the case of toll-free numbers (1-800)?

Should it be ~ 001 + 1 + Area Code + 1-800-x*x-XXXX ?

I tried that but it doesn't work. I tried it without the 'Area Code' & also without the 1-800, but both ways don't work.

I need to call up a company, and the only contact number I have is this toll free number. So urgently need some help...

  1. I've succesfully used both methods you describe.  Depending upon where I was the International access prefix was 001 or 011.

The problem with the 800 #'s is that some 800 #'s block access from international callers. Often you get a message indicating that you will have to pay the international fee for the call and that it will not be toll free.

When I need to all the states, the thing that works best for me is Skype. It's easy to call anywhere in the world and its only 2c/minute.

  2. For South Korea, there are 3 possible IDD numbers that can be used:

    001, 002, or 00700(Speed/ SKTelecom mobiles)

So, if 001 International dialling prefix isn't working for you, try 002, or 00700.

    So, dial:

    001-1-(area code, or 800)-x*x-xxxx, or

    001-1-800-x*x-xxxx , or

    002-1-800-x*x-xxxx , or

    00700-1-800-x*x-xxxx

If none of those sequences work, then the previous poster is correct about 800 numbers.

800/866/877/888 toll free numbers are regional and may not be available from Korea.

As a matter of fact, many 800 numbers are only accessible from certain regions of USA or Canada, but not both.  Some 800 numbers are available from both USA/Canada, and some are only available from limited regional areas.  It just depends on the coverage area of the 800 number being leased.  I expect many 800 numbers (if called abroad via land-line) may not work to USA or Canada....

I live in Canada, and many of the 1-800 numbers in USA are are not accessible from here.  But, some are and some aren't.  It just depends on the coverage area the subscriber wants coverage for...
