Question:

Making my grass greener.?

How do i get my grass really green and thick? I've used a lot of standard weed and feed componds and grass seeds from the local B&Q but nothing seems to work. Still got ramdom growth and varying green to yellow stripes. I try to water it every day and cut it every week to keep it resonably short but i want a full green lush lawn?!?!

  1. It might not be the grass itself but rather the soil....if the soil is clay/hardpan soil you might want to start adding gypsum to start breaking down the hard clay.

If it is sandy that keeps it from holding moisture and thus won't be lush and green.  Take or send a sample to the nearest university extension and have them test the soil to see what kind and what you need to improve it.  Tap water is not always the best water because of chemicals in it.  Learn to save rainwater and don't cut the lawn too short...

  2. Hi try using scotts turf builder as this one worked for me as it makes for a real thick root system and you should use their timed sytems to apply. They have 3 different ones to use for time of the year.I have people commenting on my lawn recently and I told them the same answer as they asked how I got it to look so green.I also apply lime 2 times a year and sue the pelletized lime so you wont burn lawn its a slow release type.

  3. One winter feed is worth two summer feeds, so give it a good raking in November and then a winter feed, come the spring say April give it another rake and a weed and feed, I guarantee you will have a perfect lawn, just like mine.

  4. 'Oh if your lawn is a farce, weeds are a right pain in the grass, simply shake this on and in a week....... dun dun dun dun dun dun dun cheer up evergreen, make it lush and green,

its the easy peasy way to get the lawn of your dreams.

    use evergreen it works great

  5. If you have patches, you could have a sub-soil problem.. eg...a water-repellent soil structure..if this is a case scenario,a pH sample could be done in different spots for comparison ...acid or alkaline ...or water poured directly onto the surface of the problem area to see if it flows away or absorbs. My guess is that it will roll off the surface. If the pH is substantially different, you will need to correct it eg. gypsum to acidify..etc. If the soil is impermeable..you will need to aerate with a fork or machinery, adding water-absorbing crystals as you go and water in.You may wish to add coarse river-sand as a fill-in/top dressing, esp. in the problem areas. DO NOT water in every day..2-3 days..of a good soaking is much better than 7 days of a light soaking..That's a waste. And causes a weak root-system. DO NOT cut it too short..as it is summer in your hemisphere and hence prone to 'burning-off'...every 9-10 days at a higher cut is better. After all this..add a nitrogen-based lawn fertiliser spread evenly and water in..Early morning or later in the evening, saving excess leaf transpiration and potential 'burning-off' by heat and chemicals...if you have friendly neighbours..I'd use chicken manure pellets as they contain phosphorous for good root development also. Sounds hard, but it's not. Good Luck.

  6. evergreen mix is the best but also use plant food at beginning whilst its growing

  7. Spray it with epsom salt..this will give it a magnesium and sulfer boost from hades..and brighten it right up..here is some info on this..

  8. Look at it for awhile while standing on your neighbors property...supposedly it'll look greener from the other side.  :D Sorry, just could not resist.

  9. Try spiking the lawn area with a garden fork before watering or feeding to make sure it's sinking into the roots and not just lying on the top.

If it's looking very bad it might be beyond repair and need replacing.  :-)
